Happy Easter

Happy Easter everyone from Madrid!

Hard to believe that it’s already the end of March. Today marks a very good day for me in that it’s the first full day I’m out of the hospital completely. Antonio and I are staying in the apartment of his good friend Montse who is generously letting us stay here while she is in Ibiza for the long weekend.

My health is OK. Yesterday, I was exhausted when we left the hospital so we had a fairly quiet afternoon and evening. The most exciting part of the day was when I was finally able to tell my dad and Florence about the situation I am in. I got really good advice from Susan Locke about what to say and, in the end, just telling him the basic news about my situation and all the support and health care that I have in place wound up being very successful. Dad and Florence are now fully in the picture, and although both Antonio and I could see he was upset, he was able to hear the news and I think having five of his beautiful great grandchildren around made a big difference in the energy in the room. A very big thanks especially to my niece and nephew for being there to help to hold everything together along with my sister.

Beautiful messages of support continue to flow in and believe me, I read them all and take them all in and they are helping me in my healing process.

Before leaving the hospital yesterday, Dr. Jimenez spent the time needed to explain everything, write prescriptions, and to send us on our way. Checking out was no more then walking out of the hospital to go into the taxi: no paperwork, no bills to pay, nothing other than goodbye. So unlike the bureaucracy in the United States!

Antonio continues to be amazing. Yesterday, he went to fill all of the prescriptions, did food shopping, prepared dinner, downloaded a TV series for us to watch before bed and continues to shower me with love! I adore this man!

Today is a beautiful sunny day here in Madrid, and after breakfast we are going to take a walk in the Retiro Park. We also need to stop by DHL to mail off my records to Dr. Golfino’s office. I was very happy to get a note from Jon Cooke saying that his father, who is very well-connected as a neurologist in New York, that in getting an surgeon with Dr. Golfino’s credentials, I should be in excellent hands.

I also want to give you a huge kiss and lots of love right now to Miguel and Carlos for doing so much to make sure that, when I get back, things will be in place both in NY as well as on Fire Island.

I know that they are getting help from Don and other people and each of you I will thank personally when I get back to the city.

The time has finally changed here in Europe to Daylight Savings, so we’re back to being six hours ahead of you in the States.

Sending lots of love your way.

OK. I’m just sending one more excerpt from a message from MaieAyoub. I thought this was particularly beautiful especially coming on this Easter Day even if I’m not Christian. By the way while in the hospital, above my bed when we walked into the room there was a gold cross with Christ. That was the first thing that was redecorated – taking off the cross and hiding it in the nightstand next to the bed. But the icon from Maie is more than welcome especially if she brings me love and healing power.

“My sweet sweet habibi

Thank you for writing dear Alan and thank you Miguel for the updates.

Dear Alan no question that this too shall pass and you will emerge a better (how can that be??? no possibile a better Alan!) and stronger person on the other side of this challenge.

We know you in the face of challenge don’t we? And you know yourself right? You know your record and your achievements and you won’t be defeated. You know to pace yourself, be gentle, generous and supportive to yourself. To open your heart and let yourself be nourished and carried by the love of us all who surround you and stand by you.

I am the present guardian of a miraculous Melkite icon of the Virgin that has been in my family for some 300 years. She is very dear to my family and we have long believed in her miraculous powers. I have called her to your side <3 <3 The gold that you see as a crown and covering her and the child's arms and hands were given to her by my late late grand father after she saved his son's life from typhoid 🙂 pic-01

stand at your side and Antonio’s for anything that I may be able to do,

I will be seeing you when you are in New York my dear and of course stand at your side and Antonio’s for anything that I may be able to do,

That was the first thing that was redecorated – taking off the cross and hiding it in the nightstand next to the bed. Off to the park!
